How much propane(in weight) does a small camp stove use? is there a more efficient fuel?

I am considering back packing and dont know what fuel to use. Would I get more cooking time for weight from sterno, propane, or Smoething else? Also, how can i make a simple dehidrator, a water purifier, and what should i pack? What are some good websites about hiking and backpacking?
