It all depends on what you have in the water and what you are trying to remove. If you have a normal municipal water supply provided to you by your city, then there is nothing toxic or living in your water that will make you sick. But there could be a high amount of minerals giving a salty taste or leaving hard water deposits on your fixtures.

To remove hard water you would want to use a water softener. A water softener replaces the Calcium, Magnesium, and other divalent cations (ions with a +2 positive charge), and replaces them with sodium. This is not good if there is someone on a sodium restricted diet in the house. Then you would need to use potassium chloride salts for your regenerations, which is healthier, but more expensive.

To remove all dissolved solids from the water you would have to use a reverse osmosis system. These are typically installed under the kitchen sink, so they only treat the water at that fixture, and do not put out as much water as a normal faucet. These will remove virtually all dissolved solids from the water, giving you very clean and taste-free water. But then you are not getting any of the minerals that you would normally get from your water.

Like I said, it all depends on what problem you are trying to solve. But if you have a municipal water supply (and not a private well) then you shouldn’t really NEED any additional treatment.
