March 17, 2008 | 3:11 AMThere are various methods to test whether something contains water (which can be a particular problem in fuel tanks). Some fuel equipment supply outlets sell water testing paste (containing calcium hydride, or other water sensitive material), which is coated onto the end of a rod, and inserted into the tank. It changes colour, if water is present.
Some professional testing equipment use a conductivity metre to test for water. A simple method is to use anhydrous copper sulphate, which is white, and changes colour to blue, if water is present.

March 20, 2008 | 2:19 PMThe easiest field detection method would be to use a Solinst Interface Probe (looks very similar to a depth to water gauge).
This device will detect the presence/depth to water, and separately, to any aqueous liquids that are not water.
