Faucet or pitcher water filter guarantees safe drinking tap water?

water filter
The L asked:

I just moved into an apartment and the water is awful. When it first comes from the faucet, it tastes fine but smells like metal or rust, but then after leaving it out for a while, it tastes metallic. Would getting a faucet or water pitcher filter give me safe drinking water? Should I start buying bottled water instead of a filter?
This is in Richardson, TX

It’s probably old pipes that is giving your water that metallic taste - not the water itself. So yes, I would buy bottled water.

I would try a PUR faucet water filter system.. It will make a BIG difference in your drinking water for coffee, tea and cooking… In the long run will be much less expensive then bottled water AND better for the environment! You can look for money saving coupons on the PUR system in the Sunday paper online etc…

    Good luck

why didn’t you tell us where you are?? USA UK England Timbuktu..
    metropolitan gated community..
    where is your community..
    NOW your problem….
get to the landlord.. if he has NO resolution
and there are many “under the counter water purifiers”
anywhy the whole facility should have a reverse osmosis filter for each complex..
No luck,, see a lawyer,, then the Department of Health

It really depends on what’s in the water. If it’s iron, it will taste nasty but won’t hurt you. If it’s lead, they need to replace the piping.

You should run your water for a couple of minutes before using it to drink, if you have this kind of problem. And the landlord or the water system should test it to make sure it is safe.
