chinatrvlr asked:

I was thinking about purifying the bottled water with either tablets or using a portable system. Will it have any effect?

in my experience the water in China is shocking. I wouldn’t ever drink it, purifying tablet or no. even if you boil the stuff a bunch of times it still has that sickly perfume smell and taste. Brrr

I didn’t try purifiers there, but I recommend sticking to the boiled water. It’s safe and you can find it everywhere in China (trains, long distance buses, hotels, businesses, restaurants).

BTW: don’t trust the bottled water in China!. (I got sick a couple of times drinking it). If you want to pack waters, it’s a good idea to bring a small thermos and fill up with boiled water when you find it.

no. do not drink the water. Stick to bottled water. It’s a good idea to bring some with you, just in case.

My good friend lives in Nanning, Guangxi. She drinks bottled water and when not available, she boils it. You do not drink tap water in China.

Even most of the Chinese I know drink bottled water. There is a huge business providing large bottles to homes for use with their water coolers/heaters. In fact, they even have special baskets for the delivery bikes.

The tap water tastes like the water I accidentally drank from the water fountain after my school had been demolished by Hurrican Andrew and the Louisiana National Guard were around passing out canned water. It tasted like licking a hospital.

I would NEVER drink the water in China..its not only polluted its full of toxic chemicals.and beware of buying bottled water on the street..its all too easy for them just to put ordinary water in the bottle (not only in China)..if you’re absolutely uncertain about the water ..always buy sparkling water.

    yes! it work !
u can buy the water purifier for ur home,i have some relations used it in their home, seems not bad

actually most chinese use to drink boiled water, coz not all the cities are rich to supply purifier water, there are just some cities, such as Foshan(Canton),and some other cities!

and the bottled water u should choose a good brand, in Canton i choose WATSONS, but just can tell u ,not all the place of China sale this brand, coz compared with other brand, WATSONS is more expensive than others.
anyway, we should choose the good & safe brand, price is not a big deal!

Do they “work” in China?! No these tablets only work in other countries.

The Chinese water is incompatible with the tablets (it’s a software conflict thing).

most mainland chinese consume bottled purified water at home nowadays. unless u know tats a good brand tat can trust, otherwise, stick on to the boiled water.
u may like to boil the bottled purified water, and boil it longer than 5 mins.
sometimes boiled tap water is not safe. i heard colleague got stone in her kidney…due to too many minerals in drinking water.
tablets usually leave a smell in water, taste like medicine.
distilled water is the best choice (Watsons distilled water), u can find it in supermarkets in major cities.
    good luck anyway.
