class b misdemeanor theft?
jessica b asked:
i was caught stealing groceries, air purifier, vacuum, and water purifier ($307) from walmart and my pretrial is tomorrow. i had a few questions if anyone can help:
1. what is a pretrial?
2. would i have better luck getting a better deal with an actual attorney or should i stay with my court appointed?
3. i am going to a university in a couple of months will this affect my addmission?
4. i am planning to be a teacher will this affect my certification?
5. is there any way to get this off my record later in life?
6. what is better, guilty or no contest?
7. can i get my record sealed later in life?

November 28, 2008 | 8:50 AMThere are usually programs for first time offenders. I know Alabama has a “Diversion” program. The DA will put your case on hold while you complete the program. The program consists of classes, admitting you are guilty of the crime, monthly meeting with you Diversion officer, paying court costs, and paying restitution. If you stick to the program and do not get into anymore trouble the DA will dismiss the case. This is the best possible outcome. You will have no criminal record. You will still have an arrest record, but people are wrongly arrested all the time. Talk to your attorney about it. The only other thing I can think of is, depending on your age, pleading youthful offender.
Diversion is expensive, but a conviction will follow you around for life.

November 30, 2008 | 4:53 PMa pretrial is where u enter a plea of guilty, not guilty, or no content. i would suggest u enter no content. that means that u are not saying that you are guilty or not guilty. talk with your court appointed lawyer and see what your maximum sentence would be and if he can get it dropped or lowered. if you dont like his response then go with a paid lawyer. because i had a court appt. lawyer once and he really went to the limit for me. so see exactly where his head is at first.
