July 29, 2006 | 9:08 PMIf you’re referring to a regular, hang-on-the-tank mechanical filter, yes. They work just fine for saltwater tanks.

July 31, 2006 | 1:37 PMYou can do that. However, if you plan on putting it back into a freshwater setup be sure to rinse it off well. All filters to my knowledge from working in a pet store can be used for both fresh and saltwater.
